Renovation News -- October

Week of October 12-16

CLOSING CENTRAL LIBRARY…..

The Central Library will be closed as a “full service” library at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 5. It will reopen on Monday, November 9th as the Children’s/Jr High Library. The public closures on Friday and Saturday, November 6 and 7, will allow staff and volunteers to concentrate on relocation and set up for two facilities.

VOLUNTEER SUPPORT

The relocation of popular collections to 290 S. Anaheim will be coordinated by Rick Brown with the assistance of Volunteer groups and pages. Contacts have been made with Project Say and Kiwanis Key Club for student volunteers. Additional groups will be contacted for assistance on Friday and Saturday. Page staff will support this move. Additional hours may be available for pages at any location on Thursday, Friday and/or Saturday, November 5 through 7. In preparation for the big move, a test drive with full carts will be scheduled next week.

“TOURING” INTERIM CENTRAL

Central Adult/Teen and Circulation staff will get a first look at the interim facility on Monday. The building, thanks to great effort by lots, but most especially our custodian, Catalina, is now clean with some furniture and shelving in place. The “tour” gives staff an opportunity to actually see the space available for staff and service.

VENDING MACHINES

The closure of the basement means that the staff lounge will not be available to staff working at Central. The vending machines will be removed during the duration of the renovation and returned when all staff are back to Broadway Central.

PUBLICIZING THE RENOVATION/RELOCATION

Are you ready for QUESTIONS????? The next phase of publicity begins….a press release has been sent to the Public Information Office (see below). Banners are printed and going to be hung next week at both facilities. A map and a FAQ sheet will be available to hand out two weeks before the move. As the “news spreads”, there will be lots of questions. If the answer is not in the press release, bookmark or FAQ, please refer the caller to Library Administration (ext 1810).

PRESS RELEASE

Anaheim Central Library Renovation – Two Downtown Libraries

ANAHEIM, CA – (). On Monday November 9, the Anaheim Central Library, 500 W. Broadway, will begin a major renovation to install ADA bathrooms and elevator. The scope of construction will limit the use of this facility. During five months of construction, November through April, Anaheim public library service in the downtown area will be provided at two facilities.

The Mary Nicolai Children’s Room in the Central Library, 500 W. Broadway, will remain open to provide service to families, parents and children from preschool through 8th grade. Open hours for this Children’s/Jr. High Library will be:

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 10 am – 8 pm;

Thursday and Friday 11 am – 8 pm;

Saturday 10 am - 6 pm.

An Adult/Teen library will open at 290 S. Anaheim Blvd only 2 blocks from Central Library (corner of Broadway and Anaheim Blvd.). Library hours at the Adult/Teen Central Library will be:

Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday 10am – 9pm;

Thursday & Friday 11am – 9pm;

Saturday 10am – 6pm.

All public adult/teen computer workstations will be relocated to this facility, but Wi Fi service will not be available. Collections of popular and new books, magazines, and DVDs can be browsed and borrowed. The large adult and teen collections will not be relocated, but individual titles can be requested from the Broadway facility for next day pickup at Adult/Teen Central Library. Parking and an exterior book drop will be available.

The separation of Children/Jr. High from Adult/Teen services may inconvenience families, readers and researchers. For full library service to all age groups and free Wi Fi access, Anaheim Central patrons are encouraged to “check out” other nearby Anaheim Library Branches during the renovation. Haskett, Euclid and Sunkist libraries are part of the City of Anaheim library system. For more information on the Central Library renovation and hours and locations of other Anaheim Libraries, call: 765-1810 or check the library’s website: www.anaheim.net/library

WHAT GOES WHERE

One of the most difficult challenges facing Central staff is “What will go Where?” Our collections, staff and equipment often serve multiple users. So…how is a parent going to borrow a new adult DVD? How can an adult get a book from the 2nd floor of the Children/Jr. High Library? What telephone number will reach the Children’s desk? Which adult titles will be moved… the interim space has room for about 10% of the adult/teen materials. What is left behind? These and dozens of other questions are being asked and answers found by Children, Teen, Circulation and Adult staff.

PRE CONSTRUCTION AT CENTRAL LIBRARY

Although construction will not start at the Central Library until Monday, November 9th, a preliminary meeting was held last week with the architect, project manager and Central library project staff to discuss the next phase of the construction…. FF&E (Furnishings, Fixtures and Equipment). This means making final decisions on tables, chairs, service desks, shelving and signage. The team is evaluating reuse of the “rocket” white/silver tables in the Teen area (will relaminate top) and reupholstering the classic furniture from the Local History Room for the Spanish Language area. Additional tables and chairs will be purchased to accommodate 10 new computers in the Adult lab. Smaller, more flexible service desks will be selected for the 1st floor. New metal shelving for adult collections has been chosen. Still identifying the reuse of DVD and CD shelving. Lots of decisions….and we haven’t even got to signage.
